Soul Salvation S/S 2011

Graduate Fashion Week

‘Soul Salvation’ is about going on a pilgrimage to achieve spiritual enlightenment, restoration of the soul, and forgiving of the self.

I was inspired by nun’s clothing and those worn by the monks in the film ‘Andre Rublev’ as well as religious iconographic paintings, metal works and the interior of Canterbury Cathedral. The idea was to juxtapose the austerity of the minimal, sometimes restrictive clothing worn by religious orders with the highly ornate and decorative elements of religious art.
The garments are accessorised with head pieces inspired by the heart-shaped habits worn by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Rosaries, crucifixes, crystal embellished rope belts, a metal sacred heart made my Maria Pegler (Clonakilty artist) knitted silver pieces and sequin embellishments by my mother (Claire Halliday) and crochet flowers by my sister (Libby Halliday) also feature. The base of the crochet flower dress is made from recycled table cloths/doilies bought from West Cork charity shops.
